The Dells were an R&B vocal group from the United States. The El-Rays were formed in 1952 while still in high school by founding members Marvin Junior, Verne Allison, Johnny Funches, Chuck Barksdale, Mickey and Lucius McGill, and made their debut album in 1954, two years after which they scored their first R&B success with “Oh What a Night.” After disbanding in 1958 as a result of a near-fatal automobile accident, the band reunited in 1960, with Funches being replaced by Johnny Carter as the lead singer.
