If you fondly remember the Hans & Franz skits from Saturday Night Live, we’re about to pump you up with some good news! According to Deadline, Dana Carvey and Kevin Nealon will be reprising their respective roles as the Austrian bodybuilding duo inspired by Arnold Schwarzenegger, but in the form of a four-part podcast series hosted by Conan O’Brien. Though originally intended to be a movie in the early 90s, the film never made it past the development phases.

The Saturday Night Live alums will be revisiting the script for the movie, which was written by Nealon, Carvey, Robert Smigel, and O’Brien. And the premise is simple: they will take turns reading their favorite scenes from the movie while reminiscing about that period of their lives. The four episodes will be released on a weekly schedule starting on May 17, 2023.

There’s a lot to be excited about from the basic premise. Though the film never made it to the production phases, it was intended to star Carvey, Nealon, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger himself, but was rumored to be shelved because other Saturday Night Live film adaptations like It’s Pat did not do well at the box office. In his infinite wisdom, O’Brien and Team Coco secured the rights to read the script on air in what will be aptly titled The Lost Hans & Franz Movie.

The upcoming series came to be after Carvey referenced the lost movie on Conan’s podcast, and the team unanimously agreed that it would be a fun time to reunite with their Saturday Night Live cohorts to bring this idea to life. O’Brien has also stated that sometimes it’s the projects that never see the light of day that he finds make him laugh the most. Considering that Carvey, Nealon, O’Brien, and Smigel have all been quite prolific since their tenure on Saturday Night Live, we know that they’re going to have some amazing insights about the creative process now that they’re older and wiser.

So if you haven’t yet checked out Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, you better update your podcast feed. The show centers around O’Brien interviewing comedians and actors he’s worked with in the past, including several Saturday Night Live veterans such as Adam Sandler, Will Ferrell, and Tina Fey. Though the Hans & Franz mini-series will probably take on a different format than the regular show, it sounds like we’re in for a tremendously hilarious blast from the past.

If you’re trying to step up your fitness game, Saturday Night Live’s Hans and Franz will probably motivate you to stop being a “flappy pathetic loser,” and get you to shift your focus to supplement stacking while clanging and banging at your local fitness center. Just make sure you don’t rack up too many weights while listening to the series because it’s hard to control your breathing while succumbing to side-splitting laughter at the behest of Nealon, Carvey, O’Brien, and Smigel. If you double over at the gym while giggling like a girly man, it will be hard to explain to the gym’s staff that the funny talking show was the catalyst for your inguinal hernia.

The Lost Hans & Franz Movie will premiere on Wednesday, May 17, 2023, and will be released in four weekly installments. Whether you want to listen to the Saturday Night Live veterans talk shop and read from their script in a serialized fashion or wait until the series concludes so you can binge through during an hours-long squat session is ultimately up to you. But if you’re a classic Saturday Night Live fan, you won’t want to miss out on this one!
